Future NG Lawyers

Summer Legal Institute – Chicago, IL

The Summer Legal Institute (August 8, 2016 – August 12, 2016) is a fun, educational, and interactive program that allows students to spend FIVE DAYS involved in legal experiences that will bring them to The John Marshall Law School (315 S. Plymouth Court), law firms, and local courts in Chicago, IL!
The program is FREE to all students, with public transportation passes available to students who express a need.*
 
Students who participate in the Summer Legal Institute will:
  • Study the legal system and how it works alongside attorney and judge volunteers;
  • Build leadership and teamwork skills;
  • Analyze selected cases, debate legal issues and participate in both a mock trial and an oral argument;
  • Gain an understanding of the real-life aspects of practicing law at a law firm or corporation;
  • Develop contacts with legal professionals and organizations that provide scholarships, internships and mentors; Receive guidance about the college admissions process and financial aid resources.**
* Housing is not available.
** Parents are strongly encouraged to attend the free college admissions and financial aid resources seminar on Friday, August 12th, followed immediately by the closing ceremony.  
 
HOW TO APPLY:
The SLI is open to students who will be high school freshmen, sophomores, juniors or seniors in the Fall of 2016 and the program is FREE to all students.  Enrollment is limited to 50 students.  Students must submit EACH of the following (online submissions are preferred, but paper applications are also accepted) in order to apply. You may complete either the online application or the paper application – do not submit both online and in paper, please.

  1. Completed answers to the questions on the online form.
  2. Attach your statement of interest. On a separate piece of paper, please submit a paragraph telling us about yourself and discussing why you would like to participate in this program. Be sure to include your name on the statement. 
  3. Attach an unofficial copy of current progress report or report card (official transcript not required). 
  4. Attach a letter of recommendation from a non-family member who knows you well.  The recommendation letter should include: (a) the writer's name, title and contact information; (b) the writer's relationship to the applicant; (c) the length of time the writer has known the applicant; and (d) why the writer believes the applicant should participate in the Summer Legal Institute.
